Cyclone Murasu Brings Red Alert for Telangana Rains

IN SHORTCyclone Murasu sets off heavy rain alerts across Telangana. Red alert for Khammam, Suryapet and Mahabubabad on November 3 as heavy rain fears mount.

Red alerts have been issued for three Telangana districts as Cyclone Murasu, which formed over the Bay of Bengal, brings heavy rain to the state for the next three to four days, the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre said on Sunday.

The warning is not a single-day scare. The forecast shows the rain building in intensity over the coming week, and the districts most at risk are in the south and central parts of the state. Residents who live in low-lying areas and near water bodies should track official updates closely.

Rain already falling on Sunday

The weather office said that scattered rain would fall on Sunday in a long list of districts. These include Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Mahbubnagar and Nagarkurnool.

Along with the rain, the centre warned of thunder and lightning and winds blowing at 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. Those gusts are not extreme on their own, but they can knock down power lines, tear at loose roofing and make travel on open roads risky when they arrive alongside downpours.

Orange alert for Monday

The situation is set to worsen on Monday. The centre said rain intensity would increase across Telangana that day, with heavy to very heavy showers in places. Orange alerts were issued for Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahbubnagar and Wanaparthy districts.

Heavy to very heavy rain is also expected in Jangaon, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri, though those warnings were described as patchy rather than district-wide.

Red alert for three districts on November 3

The most serious warning is for Tuesday, November 3. The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has issued red alerts for Khammam, Suryapet and Mahabubabad, where the forecast calls for very heavy rain in several places and extremely heavy rain in some spots.

Extremely heavy rain is likely in some places across Khammam, Suryapet and Mahabubabad districts, and the weather office has issued red alerts for those areas.

Bhadradri Kothagudem, Warangal and Hanamkonda are also under watch for extremely heavy rain in isolated pockets, and orange alerts have been put in place for those districts alongside Nalgonda, Mahabubabad and Suryapet.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also forecast for a wider set of districts on the same day. These include Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Hanamkonda.

Rain spreads to the north and east

The rain does not stop at the southern belt. Parts of Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Jangaon, Siddipet and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri could see heavy rain in places, according to the forecast shared by the weather office.

Thunderstorms with gusty winds are also expected across a long list of northern and western districts, including Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy and Jogulamba Gadwal, though the forecast for those areas is more scattered.

November 5 brings statewide showers

The alerts do not end on November 3. The centre said scattered thunderstorms with rain are expected across all districts in Telangana on November 5. Heavy rain is also likely in places across Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Siddipet and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri.

That is a long stretch of bad weather. The first alerts land on a Sunday, the peak warning arrives midweek, and the state has been told to expect rain on the following Thursday as well.
