Bank of Baroda Shares Jump 5% on NSE Stake Sale Profit

IN SHORTBank of Baroda shares jump nearly 5% as Q2 profit rises 36% on NSE stake sale. Nomura, Systematix and Dolat Capital weigh in on buy or hold now.

Shares of Bank of Baroda jumped nearly 5% on Monday after the lender reported a 36% year-on-year rise in net profit to Rs 6,532 crore for the second quarter of FY27. The stock climbed to Rs 250 apiece in morning trade.

The headline number had a helper. Bank of Baroda earned Rs 1,340 crore last month from selling a partial stake in the National Stock Exchange during its IPO. Without that one-time windfall, the profit story looks far less dramatic. Still, the bank’s net profit rose from Rs 4,809 crore in the same quarter a year earlier, and investors are now asking whether the rally can hold.

Where the Profit Really Came From

Core lending income grew, but more slowly. Net interest income rose 9% year-on-year to Rs 13,026 crore. Non-interest income, however, almost doubled to Rs 6,881 crore in Q2 FY27, up from Rs 3,515 crore in the year-ago period. That jump explains most of the earnings surge.

The pressure point is the margin. Net interest margin slipped to 2.74% from 2.96% a year earlier. For a bank, margin is the spread it earns on loans over the cost of its funds, so a drop of that size gets close attention from analysts.

A separate headline linked in the coverage points to another bright spot: Bank of Baroda’s FCNR(B) deposits surged nearly sixfold to Rs 1.03 lakh crore. That kind of deposit growth gives the bank more fuel for lending.

Nomura: Neutral, but the numbers beat its forecast

Nomura maintained its Neutral rating on Bank of Baroda but cut its target price to Rs 270 from Rs 280. The brokerage said the target implies 13% upside potential from current levels.

The research house said the bank reported strong Q2 numbers. Net profit beat Nomura’s estimate by 12%, and net interest income came in 4% higher than the brokerage had projected.

The more important signal may be the guidance. Management raised its FY27 credit growth guidance to 13-15% and deposit growth guidance to 11-13%. It kept its net interest margin guidance at 2.75-2.95%, and expects to reach the upper end of that range in Q3 and Q4. The reason, according to Nomura, is that the repo rate hike is passing through to the bank’s 38% repo-linked book.

Nomura raised its FY27 and FY28 earnings per share estimates by 14% and 5%, respectively. The gains come from higher treasury income and lower provisions in FY27, and higher net interest income in FY28. The brokerage now builds in FY27 loan growth of 16%. It expects return on assets of 0.9% and return on equity of 13-14% over FY27-28.

Systematix: The buy case in black and white

Systematix Institutional Equities maintained its Buy rating with a target price of Rs 285 apiece. The domestic brokerage said the company’s net profit came in nearly 28% above its estimate.

Asset quality was the standout for Systematix. The annualised gross slippage ratio improved by 18 basis points quarter-on-quarter to 0.8%. The gross non-performing asset ratio improved by 21 basis points and the net non-performing asset ratio by 13 basis points, both quarter-on-quarter. Systematix also pointed to an operating profit of Rs 114.3 billion, supported by gains from the NSE stake sale and revaluation.

Dolat Capital: The bear case

Dolat Capital maintained its Reduce rating with a target price of Rs 260 apiece, implying 9% upside potential. The brokerage said the company’s profit was in line with its estimates, which is a very different reading from Nomura and Systematix.

Dolat’s concern is relative valuation and growth. The brokerage said that even after factoring in higher margins following the rate hike, the bank’s net interest margins remain lower than those of its peers. Add the upcoming provisions linked to ECL norms, and the brokerage expects return on assets to stay at around 0.9%.

Despite factoring in higher NIMs post rate hike, they are lower than peers, Dolat Capital said.

Dolat also flagged loan growth. Its projection of 12% growth over FY27 and FY28 sits below its expectations for banking system growth. That is the sharpest gap between the bulls and the bear on the page: Nomura is modelling 16% loan growth for FY27, while Dolat is working with 12% over the next two years.

Where the stock stands before you buy

Bank of Baroda shares have gained around 3% in one week and more than 3% in a month. The stock is still down nearly 21% in 2026 so far, as multiple headwinds hit financial stocks. Over the past year, it has fallen more than 14%.

The longer view is more encouraging for holders. Bank of Baroda shares have jumped 19% in three years and delivered multibagger returns of more than 133% over five years.

So where does that leave the buyer? The brokerages are split. Systematix sees a Buy at Rs 285. Nomura sees Neutral at Rs 270. Dolat Capital sees Reduce at Rs 260. The shares have already moved on the earnings beat, so the next leg depends on whether the margin recovers toward the upper end of guidance and whether loan growth meets the 13-15% range management has set. Investors chasing the rebound are betting on that margin turnaround. Investors who want a cleaner story will want to see the non-interest income boost repeat without the one-time NSE gains.

The Q2 print delivered a headline profit jump, a strong operating profit, and a stock that rose on the day. Whether that translates into lasting upside depends on the next two quarters, and the brokerages have already drawn very different lines in the sand.
