This step is easy to miss because the quest does not announce itself with a large objective marker. If you have already walked past the two NPCs, backtrack to them before moving on.

Find the Ledger Below the Shrine Outer Gate

Next, the route heads down. Travel to the Shrine Outer Gate bell in the Mountain of Imprisonment. Go down the stairs and jump to the lower area. Expect a fight here, because you will have to defeat the Kui Yanyan boss before you can continue.

Once Kui Yanyan falls, keep following the lower path until you reach a fork. Take the left branch and defeat the wolves you encounter. Then turn right. The Ledger is on the ground along that route, so look down as you move through the area.

Finding the Ledger is the key checkpoint in this sequence. Nothing else in the chain will progress until you have it in your inventory.

Return the Ledger to Chen Zhu

With the Ledger in hand, go back. Bring it to Chen Zhu near the Shrine Outer Gate bell. He hands you an item, and you have to take that item back to him. You are effectively running the same loop again, so plan your route to avoid unnecessary detours.

When you return to Chen Zhu a second time, you get a dialogue choice that matters. Select the option that reads:

’This won’t absolve you of your sins.’

That line is what starts the boss fight against the Ironmask Assassin. It is the trigger for the entire final stage of the process, so make sure you pick it exactly as written.

Defeat the Ironmask Assassin

The Ironmask Assassin is the last hurdle. Defeating this Phantom Blade Zero boss gives you the Backstreet Courtyard Key. Compared with some of the other bosses in the game, this fight is considered one of the easier ones. That does not mean it is a pushover for everyone, especially players who are underleveled or still using basic gear.

If the fight is slowing you down, look at your weapon choices before you retry. Upgrading to stronger weapons can make a noticeable difference. A dedicated weapons list is available for players who want to compare options against this specific boss.

What Happens After You Get the Key

Once the Ironmask Assassin is down, the key is yours. You can now open the locked Pangzhen location that required it. You do not need to go back to the female puppet to finish the quest, because the key is already in your possession.

Still, there is a reason to return if you want the full reward. Completing the quest with the female puppet gives you the Bloodstained Necklace. That item is required to progress the Bai Xue quest, so skipping the final turn-in can leave you stuck later.

The Backstreet Courtyard Key is a good example of how Phantom Blade Zero links its locations to story progress. The area behind the locked door is not reachable through exploration alone. You have to complete a questline, defeat specific enemies, and follow the right dialogue path.
