Indian benchmark equity indices closed sharply higher on Monday, with the Sensex surging 1,233.25 points, or 1.66 per cent, to finish at 75,692.78. The Nifty jumped 387.70 points to settle at 23,440.80. It was the third straight session of gains, and the reason is simple: crude oil is falling fast.
Optimism around US-Iran talks pushed oil prices lower, and investors piled back into equities. WTI crude fell nearly 3 per cent to around $99.70, slipping below the crucial $100 mark. Brent traded below $109. The commodity’s sharp gap-down opening on Monday set the tone for the entire session.
For Indian markets, cheaper oil is a direct relief. Lower crude eases concerns over inflation and energy costs, and that shift in sentiment showed up quickly on the trading screens. Investors who sat on the sidelines during the earlier weeks of volatility were suddenly looking at a market that was moving higher, and fast.
Index heavyweight Reliance Industries posted strong gains and helped drive the advance. Among Nifty constituents, Coal India, Tata Steel and JSW Steel emerged as the top gainers, leading the broader rally. Buying interest was especially strong in oil and gas and metal counters.
Sector data told the same story. The Nifty Oil & Gas and Nifty Metal indices posted the strongest gains of the session. The Nifty IT and Nifty Media indices, however, ended in negative territory, a split that shows where money is rotating.
The technical picture is tight. The Nifty closed firmly above its 50-day simple moving average and approached the 23,500 resistance area. Analysts laid out the levels that matter now.
“The 23,250–23,350 band should now provide immediate support; holding it could open the way toward 23,600, while a break below 23,250 would weaken the breakout.”
That is the line traders are watching. A hold keeps the upside case alive. A break would undo the momentum that carried the index through three sessions.
Not every corner of the market joined the party. The Nifty MidCap 100 index declined 1.19 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 index slipped 0.71 per cent. The frontline indices surged while the broader market showed weakness, and that gap is worth paying attention to.
Foreign investors, meanwhile, turned buyers. Market watchers pointed to a global AI rotation that also provided support to domestic equities. They said the rally extended to mid- and small-cap indices as well, which suggests an improvement in market participation. That is the signal analysts want to see before calling a broader recovery.
The rupee gained ground too. It traded with marginal gains of around 0.12 per cent at 94.90, supported by the sharp drop in crude prices. Analysts expect the currency to trade in a range of 94.50 to 95.25 in the near term.
The bigger question is whether oil stays below $100. Every headline from the US-Iran talks now moves crude, and crude now moves the Sensex. For anyone who missed the first two sessions of this rally, the window to get in at these levels is narrowing with every point the index climbs.
Bottom line: a crude slide, a foreign investor return and a sharp three-day rally have put Dalal Street in a hurry. The next test is whether the Nifty can hold 23,250 and push through 23,500. If it does, the 23,600 target comes into view. If it fails, the breakout case weakens fast.
