A young woman in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, tragically died following complications from a home birth she reportedly attempted after watching YouTube videos, eschewing professional medical assistance. The incident, which occurred on June 24, has prompted immediate inquiries from both health authorities and local police, highlighting the grave dangers of relying on unverified online information for critical medical procedures.

The victim, identified as Sasikala, wife of Karthik, resided in Thalavaypalayam near Uthukuli. The couple already had a four-year-old daughter and was expecting their second child. According to available information, the family made the decision to opt for a natural birth at home, reportedly influenced by content found on YouTube, rather than seeking care at a hospital.

Sasikala successfully gave birth to a baby girl at home. However, she subsequently suffered severe postpartum bleeding, a life-threatening complication that did not subside. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, her family rushed her to the Government Medical College Hospital in Perundurai for urgent treatment. Despite initial efforts, her condition necessitated a transfer to a private hospital in Coimbatore for more advanced medical intervention, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

Postpartum haemorrhage, or severe bleeding after childbirth, is a leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. It can occur rapidly and, if not managed promptly and effectively by trained medical professionals, can lead to shock, organ failure, and death.
