Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced a three-day official visit to Seychelles on Friday, with a distinctive engagement planned: a meeting with Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal. This trip underscores the deepening diplomatic ties between India and the Indian Ocean island nation.

Jonathan, an Aldabra Giant tortoise, is estimated to be around 194 years old. He resides at the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens and holds the Guinness World Record for his remarkable longevity. While his exact birth year remains unverified, he has significantly surpassed the typical lifespan of his species.

This unique interaction is more than a mere photo opportunity. It carries profound symbolic weight, reflecting shared themes of heritage, sustainability, and conservation. These principles have become increasingly central to the engagement between India and Seychelles.

Upon his arrival, PM Modi is scheduled to visit the Seychelles National Botanical Gardens. There, he will participate in a tree plantation ceremony. This event highlights both nations’ commitment to environmental preservation, biodiversity protection, and fostering climate resilience across the vital Indian Ocean region.

The Prime Minister’s itinerary also includes attending the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Seychelles’ National Day as the Chief Guest. This marks a significant milestone: 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He will also participate in a programme at the Seychelles Coast Guard Base, underscoring robust cooperation in maritime security.

India and Seychelles have long maintained close collaboration on maritime security and regional stability. Defence and security form a crucial pillar of their bilateral relationship. A contingent of Indian defence personnel and Indian Navy ships will also join the National Day commemorations, showcasing this strong partnership.

During his visit, PM Modi is slated to hold comprehensive bilateral talks with Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie. Their discussions are expected to review and expand cooperation across various sectors. Key areas include maritime security, the burgeoning blue economy, concerted climate action efforts, and further defence collaboration.

PM Modi last visited Seychelles in 2015. Officials anticipate this current visit will further solidify people-to-people ties. It aims to unlock new avenues for economic and strategic cooperation, reinforcing India’s commitment to its partners in the Indian Ocean region. The emphasis on shared values and mutual interests continues to drive this important diplomatic engagement.
