Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has issued a directive that all future government bus procurements in the state will exclusively consist of air-conditioned (AC) vehicles. This significant policy shift, aimed at enhancing public comfort and encouraging wider travel, was announced by Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Minister Parthiban conveyed the Chief Minister’s clear vision for a modernized public transport system. He emphasized that CM Vijay desires the public to experience extensive and comfortable journeys across Tamil Nadu in air-conditioned buses. This move marks a notable upgrade in the state’s commitment to improving commuter experience.

The announcement came on the sidelines of an event organized by the ruling TVK party in Salem. Parthiban further elaborated on the Chief Minister’s broader ambition, stating that Vijay aims to connect every remote region within Tamil Nadu through an efficient bus network. The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of equipping all buses with necessary facilities to ensure comfortable travel for every individual, including himself.

This directive follows Chief Minister Vijay’s recent personal experience traveling on a government bus, during which he reportedly expressed a wish for all new vehicles to feature air conditioning. His direct engagement with public transport appears to have reinforced his commitment to upgrading the travel experience for millions of daily commuters across the state.

Just last week, CM Vijay flagged off a substantial fleet of 300 new buses, representing an investment of Rs 127.21 crore. This fleet comprised 164 diesel buses and 136 BS-VI compliant CNG buses, immediately deployed from major transit hubs like Koyambedu and Kilambakkam. The goal was to boost connectivity and significantly reduce waiting times for passengers, a critical step in urban and rural mobility.

While the recently launched fleet included a mix of vehicle types, the new directive ensures that all subsequent procurements will prioritize AC models. This decision reflects the TVK government’s overarching objective to modernize Tamil Nadu’s existing public transport infrastructure and enhance connectivity throughout the southern state.
