Star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is making a high-profile return to Delhi Capitals for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, agreeing to a substantial pay cut after two underwhelming seasons with Lucknow Super Giants. This significant trade deal, formally announced by the IPL, also sees prominent spinner Kuldeep Yadav moving from Delhi Capitals to Lucknow Super Giants.

Pant, who had become the most expensive player in IPL history when LSG acquired him for a staggering Rs 27 crore, will now play for Delhi Capitals at a revised fee of Rs 15 crore. This represents a 44 percent reduction from his previous salary, underscoring the mutual decision to part ways following his struggles at LSG. The 2024 auction saw Lucknow Super Giants outbid Delhi Capitals for Pant, with LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka expressing ambitious hopes for a long-term association, even envisioning Pant leading the side to multiple IPL titles over 15 years.

Having been dropped from Kolkata Knight Riders, Kuldeep revitalized his career after joining DC in 2022, taking 72 wickets in 65 matches and re-establishing himself as one of the most effective wicket-taking bowlers in the competition. One of India’s premier white-ball bowlers, Kuldeep will join Lucknow Super Giants at his existing fee of INR 13.50 crore.

This trade brings an interesting full circle to the events of October 2024, when Pant himself fueled speculation about his future with a tweet questioning if he would be sold at auction and for how much. This was despite DC co-owner Parth Jindal’s earlier comments affirming the franchise’s intention to retain him. Ultimately, Pant entered the auction, and LSG secured him after beating Delhi’s RTM (Right to Match) card at Rs 21 crore, a figure now dwarfed by his new salary.

For Delhi Capitals, Pant’s return offers strategic flexibility. He could potentially form a formidable opening partnership with KL Rahul or provide crucial stability in the middle order, allowing power-hitters like Tristan Stubbs to bat lower down the order and maximize their impact in the death overs.
