Mercedes GLC Electric Launched in India at ₹78.5 Lakh

IN SHORTMercedes GLC Electric launches in India at Rs 78.5 lakh, claiming 711 km range, 4.3-second 0-100 km/h and 300 km in 10 minutes. Deliveries begin Diwali.

Mercedes-Benz has launched the GLC Electric SUV in India on Wednesday, starting at ₹78.5 lakh ex-showroom. The German luxury carmaker will assemble the electric SUV locally, and the company has already opened the order books. Deliveries begin around Diwali.

The launch arrives with a strong early signal. The company says the SUV has already received more than 1,000 bookings, which means it is sold out until March 2027.

Over 700 km on a single charge, according to the company

The headline number is range. Mercedes-Benz claims the GLC Electric can cover up to 711 km on a single charge, based on WLTP certification. The company built the SUV on a 400V architecture.

Buyers should read that figure with some caution. The company itself notes that real-world range will vary with road conditions, driving style and the weight carried inside the car. The official number is a benchmark, not a daily promise.

A 94kWh battery and dual motors built for punch

Under the skin sits a 94kWh battery pack. Two electric motors work together, one driving the front wheels and the other the rear, which gives the SUV all-wheel drive. Combined, the motors produce 490hp and 800Nm of peak torque.

Those figures translate into serious acceleration. Mercedes-Benz says the GLC Electric goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. For a family SUV that weighs roughly 2.5 tonnes, that is a rapid time.

A two-speed gearbox handles the power delivery. The first gear focuses on quick acceleration, while the second gear prioritises efficiency on the open road. The setup aims to balance thrilling launches with better energy use during cruising.

Charging that changes the equation

Charging is where the GLC Electric makes its boldest pitch. The SUV comes with 22kW AC charging as standard. On a 330kW DC fast charger, the company says the battery can be topped up in just 10 minutes to deliver around 300 km of driving range.

The company says a 10-minute stop at a 330kW DC fast charger can add enough energy for about 300 km of driving.

In practical terms, that is a tea break. For owners planning long highway runs, a quick stop could cover a substantial chunk of the journey without a long wait at the charger.

Bigger body, bigger presence

Mercedes-Benz has made the electric version larger than its petrol and diesel GLC. The GLC Electric is 140mm longer, 23mm wider and 12mm taller. Its wheelbase grows by 84mm to 2,972mm, which frees up cabin space for passengers.

The styling leans hard into performance. An AMG styling package comes as standard, adding 20-inch alloy wheels and AMG-designed front and rear bumpers. The body avoids heavy creases and sharp cuts, opting instead for a clean, smooth profile.

The front grille is the showstopper. It features 914 individual pixel lighting elements that form different patterns when the car is parked, started or switched off. The design takes cues from classic Mercedes models such as the W114 and W108. The SUV comes in six colours, and the last three carry the company’s special manufacturer paint option.

At the rear, a gloss-black panel holds the tail lamps and the Mercedes logo. The headlights and taillights carry the brand’s signature three-pointed-star design.

A theatre-sized screen inside the cabin

The interior is where the GLC Electric pulls ahead of rivals on sheer spectacle. A 39.1-inch hyperscreen stretches from one edge of the dashboard to the other. It is one continuous panel with no borders or partitions between sections, rather than a trio of separate displays.

That screen comes at a cost in buttons. Physical controls are scarce, and even the air conditioning runs through the display. The touch response is quick and the graphics are high definition. Drivers can switch the screen’s look among 11 preset themes.

Luxury touches continue elsewhere. Wood, metal and leather trim combine in the cabin. The centre console gets a black open-pore wood finish, and the air vents carry a metallic trim. A 15-speaker 3D Burmester sound system sits inside, and the sporty four-spoke steering wheel reflects the AMG line-up. Buyers can choose black, beach brown or ivory beige interiors.

The panoramic glass roof stands out too. It produces a starry lighting effect, and it has no conventional sunshade. Instead, the driver can electronically adjust how transparent the glass is.

Convenience features add to the list. The SUV includes two wireless phone chargers, ambient lighting, AI-based features, an electric tailgate and electrically folding rear seats.

Safety and space for the long haul

Mercedes-Benz has equipped the GLC Electric with a Level-2 advanced driver assistance system, or ADAS. The system relies on eight cameras and five radars. Auto parking assist, a 360-degree camera and nine airbags round out the safety kit. The front seats offer massage and heating functions, but they do not get ventilation.

Storage is generous. The boot offers 570 litres of space, and a 128-litre front storage compartment sits under the bonnet.

For now, the GLC Electric arrives as a clear statement from Mercedes-Benz in India. Blistering acceleration, a 700-plus km claimed range and a charging claim that rewrites the rules for a family SUV give enthusiasts plenty to talk about. The order books suggest buyers are already listening.
