PS6 Development on Track, Sony CFO Confirms in Q2 2026

IN SHORTSony says PS6 development is on track and memory is secured despite the RAM shortage. Here’s what its Q2 2026 earnings call revealed about the PS6 timeline.

Sony’s PS6 development is on track, and the company’s chief financial officer says it is moving forward on schedule. Lin Tao made the update during a web call discussing Sony’s Q2 2026 financial results, which the company released on November 5, 2026.

Tao said PS6 development is “progressing as scheduled,” and described Sony’s progress on the “next-generation PlayStation” as solid. That is the line PlayStation fans have been waiting to hear. The financial details wrapped around it are where the real timeline clues are hiding.

Start with the console that is still selling. PS5 sales have reached 97.9 million units worldwide, after another 2.6 million units sold between July and September 2026. With GTA 6 set to launch in Q3 2026, the console is likely to surpass 100 million units.

The same report showed Marvel’s Wolverine passing 2.4 million copies worldwide. PlayStation game revenue also grew, even as the physical media backlash continued. Sony is making money from its platform, and the hardware cycle is the next question on the table.

That question has a clear answer from the CFO about spending. Tao confirmed that Sony has secured sufficient memory components to keep PS6 development on track, despite the ongoing RAM shortage. That matters because memory has been the pressure point for next-generation hardware.

The money starts moving next year. Sony is preparing for its next business year, which begins in April 2027. Tao was direct about what that means for the company’s plans.

“From next fiscal year onward, there will be investment in the new platform. For future growth, we have to attach great importance to a new platform and make the necessary investments for that. We have to support the soundness of our platform and think about how rationally we can invest in that platform. We will announce that at an appropriate time in the future.”

Notice what she did not say. Tao did not offer a launch window, a price, or a specific year for the hardware. She said Sony will announce those details at an appropriate time, which keeps the company’s options open and the public guessing.

Tao also addressed the slowdown in the current console. She said new PS5 unit sales are gradually declining, as expected at this stage of the console life cycle. She added that the PlayStation platform continues to expand and grow in a stable manner.

Then came the line that stood out most. Tao said, “We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next-generation platform [next year].” That bracketed timing points toward the coming year as the period when preparation becomes more visible.

Earlier reports have put the PS6’s memory costs at over $680 per console. That figure, if accurate, helps explain why Sony is being careful with its spending and why the company is talking about rational investment rather than a rush to market. The price tag on the next PlayStation could be one of the biggest stories when it finally arrives.

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki addressed the timeline earlier this year, revealing in an interview that the PS6 has no release date. Tao’s comments from the latest earnings call do not change that. Development is ongoing, and the company has not named a date.

That leaves a wide window. With development still underway, the next PlayStation could be several years away, potentially arriving in 2028 or later. It may also come with a hefty price, given the memory costs reported so far.

For players, the honest read is that PS6 is not imminent, but it is no longer a vague rumor either. The company is confirming progress, confirming memory supply, and tying real investment to the next fiscal year. That combination is what makes the next twelve months worth watching closely.

Until Sony names a date, the firmest marker is the money. Investment in the new platform starts in the fiscal year beginning April 2027, and that is when the PS6 story shifts from quiet development to something the company has to pay for in public.
