YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused the Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government of undermining democracy and freedom of expression in Andhra Pradesh. His strong allegations follow the recent restriction of the YSRCP's official Facebook page, which he views as a deliberate act of suppression against the opposition.

Speaking out on 'X', the former Chief Minister declared, “This is not just an attack on YSRCP; it is an attack on democratic values and freedom of expression.” He asserted that his party's social media presence serves to reveal facts, expose government failures and corrupt practices, and highlight issues directly affecting the people of the state. This incident, according to Reddy, is part of a larger pattern of attempts to silence dissenting voices within Andhra Pradesh.

The restriction of the Facebook page is not an isolated event, Jagan Mohan Reddy claimed. He pointed to the earlier takedown of the YSRCP's official Instagram handle, suggesting a concerted effort to curb the opposition's digital reach. Silencing an opposition party's platforms for speaking truth, he argued, establishes a dangerous precedent that runs contrary to fundamental democratic principles.

Reddy further alleged that a broader strategy of suppression is evident across the state. This includes police cases filed against individuals who question government actions and restrictions placed on critical online content. He specifically cited concerns raised over expenditure related to the Amaravati capital development, alleged irregularities in the DSC (District Selection Committee) process, and issues surrounding TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) ghee tenders, all of which he claims have faced suppression.

According to the YSRCP chief, evidence pertaining to corruption and governmental failures is being actively suppressed through intimidation tactics and censorship. He affirmed that the YSRCP would vigorously challenge these restrictions through all available legal and constitutional avenues. Reddy maintained that no amount of intimidation, censorship, or alleged misuse of institutions would silence the voice of the people or prevent his party from holding those in power accountable. He demanded the immediate restoration of the party's official Facebook page, emphasizing its necessity for upholding democratic values and constitutional freedoms.

In response, TDP spokesperson Neelayapalem Vijay Kumar vehemently rejected Jagan Mohan Reddy's accusations, dismissing them as baseless. Kumar contended that the restriction on the YSRCP's Facebook page was not an act of political vendetta but rather a legal consequence of the party's repeated violations of cyber laws. He highlighted that Facebook's action was taken under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, indicating that the platform itself found content linked to the page to be in breach of applicable laws.

Kumar asserted that the YSRCP owes the public a clear explanation regarding the specific activities that prompted Meta, Facebook's parent company, to restrict the party's official page in India. He alleged that YSRCP-affiliated social media platforms have, for years, engaged in targeted trolling, the dissemination of fake narratives, and the circulation of defamatory content against political opponents. The TDP spokesperson also claimed past instances where deepfakes, morphed content, and misinformation campaigns were deployed to target TDP leaders and their family members.

Rejecting any notion of political interference, Kumar reiterated that the action was initiated by a private global intermediary based on concrete evidence of persistent violations. He stressed that the law applies equally to all individuals and political parties, regardless of their political affiliation. The TDP leader concluded by advocating for a responsible and dignified digital discourse in Andhra Pradesh, one free from misinformation, abuse, and unlawful online activity, underscoring the importance of ethical conduct in the digital sphere.
