Chennai Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into an alleged conspiracy dubbed "Project Meghalaya." This intricate plot reportedly aimed to destabilize the recently formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government in Tamil Nadu by offering substantial bribes to multiple party Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

The probe has already seen a senior television journalist questioned and several arrests made, casting a significant shadow over the state’s political landscape and raising critical questions about democratic integrity.

The core of the case revolves around claims that attempts were made to persuade at least one TVK MLA to defy the party whip during crucial assembly voting. N Elaiyaraja, the TVK MLA from Uthangarai, filed the initial complaint, alleging he was offered a staggering Rs 35 crore to vote against his party’s official stance.

Elaiyaraja further claimed that he and his family faced severe threats after he refused the lucrative offer. Police investigations have since revealed a broader scheme, referred to as "Project Meghalaya," designed to approach approximately 15 TVK MLAs with financial inducements in a concerted effort to topple the elected government led by actor-turned-politician Vijay.

The police’s actions concerning journalist Vijayan have drawn sharp criticism from media bodies, most notably the Chennai Press Club. The club condemned the police’s approach, describing it as an attempt to suppress press freedom and intimidate journalists.

The Press Club highlighted that Vijayan was questioned late into the night, had his phone seized without what they deemed proper procedure, and was recalled for further questioning.
