Green Water Tankers: Hyderabad Plans Treated Sewage Supply

IN SHORTHyderabad’s HMWSSB is preparing Green Water tankers to supply treated sewage for construction, industry and parks, with GPS tracking and app bookings.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is preparing to launch Green Water tanker services that will supply treated sewage water for non-potable uses across Hyderabad, with the rollout planned for November.

The water will come from the city’s sewage treatment plants (STPs). It is meant for construction projects, industrial operations, parks, greenery, road cleaning and dust suppression. Drinking water is not part of the deal.

How the Green Water tanker system will work

Every tanker will carry distinctive branding and GPS equipment. That lets the board track each vehicle’s movement, supply schedule and delivery details in real time.

Filling stations will use E-POS machines to digitally record water quantities, bookings and supplies. Customers will not have to rely on paper trails, because every transaction will leave a digital record.

A dedicated mobile app will handle registration, online booking, tanker allocation, GPS tracking, digital payments and delivery confirmation. Customers who own their own tankers can also collect treated water, but only under prescribed rules.

Quality matters too. The treated water will be tested regularly to maintain prescribed standards, and Green Water supply is limited to non-drinking purposes.

A tight deadline and a demand survey

HMWSSB Managing Director K Ashok Reddy has instructed officials to complete technical and operational arrangements by November 1. Before any filling stations open, the board will assess area-wise demand from construction projects, industries, commercial complexes, government institutions and gated communities.

Once that demand map is ready, nearby government and private sewage treatment plants will be developed as Green Water filling stations. The approach puts the plants closest to the demand at the center of the plan.

Reddy also gave officials a clear push on outreach. In a directive reported by Telangana Today, he told them to coordinate with builders, developers and industrial associations to expand use of treated water.

Increase the use of treated water as an alternative to drinking water and groundwater.

Why this matters for Hyderabad

This is a Telangana story first. The plan targets the city’s construction sites, factories, parks and roads, the places where large volumes of water get used every day. Shifting those uses to treated sewage water could reduce pressure on drinking water and groundwater supplies in the city.

The board’s push also targets the biggest bulk users in the city. Builders, developers and industrial units are the audience the board wants to win over first, because their demand is what will make the filling stations viable.

A blueprint worth watching

Water scarcity is threatening major cities around the world, and the question for planners is no longer whether to reuse water but how to do it at scale. Hyderabad’s Green Water model tries to answer that with a simple idea: sell treated wastewater for jobs that do not need drinking quality, and track every litre from plant to tanker to site.

That combination of GPS tracking, digital payments and regular quality checks is what makes the plan worth watching. If it works, the model could give other Indian cities a tested template for urban water sustainability. If it stalls, it will show the hurdles that stand between a good idea and a working system.

For now, the countdown is on. The board has set November 1 as its deadline for technical and operational arrangements, and the city will soon find out whether treated sewage can become a reliable part of its daily water mix.

TL;DR

  • HMWSSB is preparing to launch Green Water tanker services in Hyderabad in November.
  • The service will supply treated sewage water from sewage treatment plants for non-potable uses.
  • Uses include construction, industrial operations, parks, road cleaning and dust suppression.
  • GPS-tracked, branded tankers and E-POS machines will record every delivery and booking.
  • A dedicated mobile app will handle registration, bookings, payments and delivery confirmation.
  • Officials have been told to complete arrangements by November 1, and supply is strictly non-drinking.
