Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President KT Rama Rao (KTR) launched a scathing attack on the Congress government on Wednesday, holding Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's administration directly responsible for the widespread disruption and traffic chaos that gripped Hyderabad following the season's inaugural significant rainfall. KTR asserted that the city's infrastructure proved woefully inadequate, unable to cope with even a moderate downpour, exposing a complete failure in monsoon preparedness and a neglect of essential pre-monsoon maintenance work typically undertaken before the rainy season commences.

The former minister highlighted the severe difficulties faced by Hyderabad's residents, particularly women and office-goers, many of whom endured hours-long commutes and were left stranded in gridlocked traffic. He criticised the government's slow and ineffective response to the public grievances that quickly mounted as the city struggled with waterlogging and congestion. KTR's remarks underscore a growing political tension surrounding urban governance in Telangana's capital.

He specifically alleged that the current administration had failed to carry out crucial pre-monsoon works, which are vital for ensuring the city's drainage systems and roads can withstand heavy rains. These routine preparations, according to KTR, were either ignored or executed poorly, leading directly to the widespread inconvenience experienced by citizens. The BRS leader's accusations suggest a lapse in proactive governance, a critical aspect for a metropolitan area prone to seasonal flooding.

KTR drew a sharp contrast with the previous BRS government's tenure, recalling infrastructure projects like the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) and the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP). The SNDP, for instance, focused on upgrading and widening storm water drains to enhance the city's capacity to handle heavy rainfall, thereby mitigating urban flooding. Similarly, the SRDP aimed at building flyovers, underpasses, and grade separators to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the city. KTR accused the current Congress administration of failing to either continue or strengthen these crucial efforts, thereby undoing progress and leaving the city vulnerable.

Beyond traffic and flooding, the BRS leader pointed to reports of widespread power outages and alarming incidents of electrocution during the rains. He contended that these issues underscored a broader governmental neglect of public welfare and civic safety, suggesting the administration was preoccupied with land-related matters rather than prioritising vital urban infrastructure improvements. Such incidents raise serious questions about the maintenance of electrical infrastructure and public safety protocols during adverse weather conditions.

KTR issued a stark warning regarding the political fallout, stating that Hyderabad's electorate would hold the Congress government accountable in the upcoming municipal elections. He emphasised Hyderabad's critical role as Telangana's economic backbone, urging the government to immediately refocus its efforts on bolstering civic infrastructure and public services to prevent future recurrences of such widespread disruption. The BRS leader's comments signal an early salvo in what is likely to be a contentious political battle over urban governance and development as the state heads towards local body polls. The effectiveness of the government's future monsoon management will undoubtedly become a key electoral issue, shaping public perception and potentially influencing voting patterns.
