Russell Brand Trial: Wife Laura Says ‘I Feel Very Seen’

IN SHORTLaura Brand tells court she feels “very seen” by husband Russell Brand as his rape trial at Southwark Crown Court continues. Details inside.

Laura Brand, the wife of comedian Russell Brand, told Southwark Crown Court on Thursday that she “feels very seen” by him, as his rape and sexual assault trial continues in London.

Brand took the stand on Wednesday and said he had persuaded no one to testify on his behalf. The next morning, his wife stepped into the witness box. The couple married in 2017 and share three children.

The charges are serious. Brand, 50, is accused of three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault and one allegation of attempted indecent assault. Six women allege offenses dating from 1999 to 2009. He denies the allegations vehemently and denies any criminal wrongdoing.

Among the claims is a woman who says he raped her in a Bournemouth hotel room in 1999, after one of his comedy gigs. Another alleges he grabbed her breasts and pushed her into a toilet at a Soho bar, and that he sexually assaulted her there in 2004. A third woman alleges Brand raped her at his home in Hampstead in 2009, after consensual sex. The court has heard those allegations; none of them has been proven.

Laura Brand is the sister of British TV presenter Kirsty Gallacher. She told the court she first dated Brand in 2006, when she was 19 and he was 31. They broke up in 2007. The relationship had become “a full sexual relationship,” she said, but it “developed at my own pace.”

She also said she felt “inexperienced,” having had only one previous sexual partner. She told jurors she knew Brand liked women, and that by the latter half of that year he was seeing other people.

“I was not interested in having a relationship with him if he was sleeping with other people. I was invested; we both had told each other we loved each other, but it was clear it was difficult for him to be monogamous.”

When they split, she said she was “a little heartbroken.” They stayed close, though she said she did not see Brand during his marriage to pop star Katy Perry. They reconnected in 2015.

Under questioning from Ian Winter, Brand’s defence lawyer, she described her husband in warm terms. She called him “caring and kind, a wonderful father to our children, and an amazing, attentive husband,” and said he has an “eye for detail I have never known before.”

Then came the line that will travel fastest. Brand’s wife said she felt something she had never experienced with anyone else.

“I feel very seen by him. We have a very honest, frank and clear relationship and marriage. Our relationship has always been about honesty. I love him very much.”

The cross-examination turns sharp

The mood in the courtroom shifted once the lead prosecutor, Riel Karmy-Jones, began her cross-examination. Karmy-Jones pointed to a 2020 appearance by Laura Brand on a podcast, Made by Mammas. In that interview, she said she had “not seen [Brand] for years” when they met up in 2014.

The prosecution put it to her that the pair had not “hung out lots” between 2007 and 2015, as she had suggested in court. Her reply was blunt. “I have to say you’re wrong,” she told Karmy-Jones.

The exchange grew tense. Laura Brand was escorted out of the courtroom about halfway through the defence’s questioning, and there was a brief disruption before proceedings resumed.

Judge steps in twice

The most dramatic moment came when Winter asked, “What is your view as to the truth of the allegations?” Justice Bennathan intervened immediately. “No, no, no. She is not an expert witness,” he said.

Winter then tried to reframe the question, asking, “What is your view as to his character?” Karmy-Jones objected. “That is wholly unacceptable,” she said. The jury and Laura Brand were sent out briefly.

Brand, sitting in the dock, reportedly chuckled at one point while his wife spoke about having “many friends, and there are colleagues, and we are grateful for those people.”

Faith, book and a timeline in question

Laura Brand confirmed that her husband was baptised in April 2024. That was after the rape and sexual assault allegations against him had been made public. She also said his book, How to Become a Christian in Seven Days, was published this year. Its subtitle reads: “May take 50 years of sin and serious fuck-ups to get started.”

Those dates matter to the defence and the prosecution alike. The jury must weigh a faith narrative and a character defence against six women’s accounts, spanning a decade and multiple locations across England.

What happens next

The trial continues. Brand has not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations remain untested before a jury verdict. Each witness who takes the stand now carries the weight of a case that has drawn intense public attention for months.

For now, the defining image from Thursday is a wife insisting her marriage is built on honesty, and a prosecutor insisting her account of the past does not add up.
