Qubic Halts Chain After 1,400 Wallets Drained in $1.4M Hack

IN SHORTQubic froze its layer-1 blockchain after an exploit drained 1,400 wallets of $1.4 million in QU tokens, pausing operations to isolate the breach.

The layer-1 cryptocurrency network Qubic halted its blockchain on October 18 after an attacker compromised 1,400 wallets to siphon off approximately 2.94 quadrillion QU tokens valued at $1.4 million (roughly Rs. 13.3 crore).

The sudden shutdown, executed at network tick 85,371,949, sent shockwaves through the ecosystem as core developers scrambled to intercept the catastrophic drain before the digital assets could vanish into decentralized markets. The incident highlights the severe security risks haunting digital asset holders, where a solitary client-side mathematical vulnerability can instantly expose hundreds of user accounts to automated liquidation.

Flawed Entropy at Root of Wallet Compromise

The breach did not originate from a smart contract exploit on the ledger itself, but from a catastrophic flaw embedded directly within the wallet generation mechanism. Security investigations confirmed that specific Qubic wallet generation tools suffered from inadequate randomness during recovery seed creation. Rather than deploying an unpredictable cryptographic algorithm, the software relied on standard JavaScript Math.random() execution, which drastically reduced entropy and allowed the attacker to reverse-engineer private keys.

"Poor randomisation during recovery seed generation makes it easier to reverse-engineer the private key."

Qubic’s core team noted that the drained addresses fell into specific clusters determined by the operating device, internet browser, and application framework used when the recovery phrases were originally generated.

Asset Freeze and Exchange Interception

To halt the ongoing exfiltration, developers suspended the entire ledger. Data released by Qubic revealed that 87.1 percent of the stolen funds—approximately 2.56 trillion QU—remained contained on-chain at the moment transactions were halted. However, the attacker managed to deposit the remaining 12.9 percent, totaling 379.26 billion QU, onto the centralized crypto exchange MEXC.

Acting on emergency notifications, MEXC blocked the receiving deposit address within an hour. The exchange subsequently suspended all QUBIC deposits and withdrawals at the project team’s request, effectively trapping the transferred assets and preventing the hacker from offloading them on active spot order books.

Governance Deliberations and Ecosystem Paralysis

Despite freezing the vast majority of the purloined tokens, the Qubic network remains completely suspended with no official restart timeline. The process of recovering the stolen assets and resuming transaction processing depends entirely on a vote by the network’s decentralized validation operators, known as Computors. Developers stated that a complete technical post-mortem report will be released once recovery solutions are formalized.

To prevent future seed compromises, the development team updated its web wallet repository on GitHub to version 4.26.4. The patch completely replaced Math.random() with crypto.getRandomValues(), implementing a cryptographically secure random value generator to safeguard seed creation moving forward.

Systemic Key Generation Failures Alarm Investors

The Qubic disaster mirrors an alarming trend of key-generation vulnerabilities plaguing the wider cryptocurrency landscape. A comparable flaw previously compromised Coldcard hardware wallet users, resulting in the theft of 584 Bitcoin worth approximately $38 million (roughly Rs. 360 crore). In that instance, the exploit moved 1,324 chunks of BTC across 500 separate transactions within a three-block window.

Galaxy Digital chief researcher Alex Thorn previously revealed that at least 15 distinct attackers had weaponized that specific Coldcard flaw. As global investors face recurring security compromises, the Qubic shutdown underscores the high-stakes reality that client-side software flaws remain just as hazardous as core protocol breaches.

TL;DR

  • Qubic suspended blockchain operations at tick 85,371,949 following an exploit that drained 1,400 user wallets.
  • The attacker siphoned 2.94 quadrillion QU tokens worth approximately $1.4 million.
  • Insufficient randomness from JavaScript Math.random() allowed the hacker to derive private keys.
  • About 87.1 percent of stolen tokens remain frozen on-chain, while MEXC locked the remaining funds.
  • Network restart and asset recovery await formal approval from consensus operators known as Computors.
