Haryana’s Nishchay set a national record in the men’s under-18 discus throw on Monday, winning gold at the 41st National Junior Athletics Championships at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. His best mark of 66.75m eclipsed the previous national and meet record of 64.09m, which Arjun had set in 2010.
The record fell in his second legal attempt. Nishchay opened with a throw of 64.72m, already past the old standard, and then pushed further. That 66.75m effort became the mark that rewrote the record book.
He improved the national mark further with a throw of 66.75m in his second legal attempt.
The rest of his round was uneven. His third attempt measured 64.70m, and his final three attempts were recorded as no marks. None of that changed the outcome. The 66.75m stood as the best throw of the competition and carried him to the title.
Silver and bronze stay in the discus family
Rajasthan’s Vishal Kumar finished second with a throw of 57.72m. Haryana’s Dev Chauhan completed the podium with bronze at 55.28m. Haryana finished with two of the three medals in the event, a strong showing that underlines the depth of talent the state brought to the ring.
Nishchay’s record also moved the men’s under-18 discus into a new conversation. The previous benchmark had stood since 2010, and the 66.75m mark now sits as the new national standard for the age group.
A national championship packed with standout performances
The championship was not a one-event show. Athletes from across the country competed in shot put, race walk, heptathlon, high jump, long jump and discus, and several of the day’s results carried the same kind of pride that Nishchay’s throw did.
In the men’s under-20 shot put, Akhand Pratap Singh of Uttar Pradesh won with 18.12m. Aryan Satpute of Maharashtra was second at 18.08m, and Abhimanyu Kushwaha of Maharashtra took third at 17.89m.
The men’s 5,000m race walk went to Lal Krishna S of Kerala, who finished in 21:29.76. Pawan Singh Gurjar of Rajasthan was second in 21:30.93, and Firdous Alam of Assam took third in 21:35.26. The margins at the top were tight, with less than six seconds separating the first three.
In the men’s heptathlon, Advith V Yadav of Karnataka scored 4,860 points to lead the field. Nagar Singh Kanesh of Madhya Pradesh followed with 4,817 points, and Akash Ashvini of Bihar was third with 4,706 points.
Jumps, throws and walks across age groups
In the boys’ under-16 high jump, Jasbin James of Kerala, Jinay Shah of Gujarat and Gulshan Kumar of Uttar Pradesh each cleared 1.80m, and the results list them in that order on the podium. In the boys’ under-16 long jump, Arman Khan of Uttar Pradesh leapt 5.18m to top the event. Rohit Raj of Bihar was second at 5.06m, and Longjam T of Manipur took third at 5.03m.
The women’s under-20 high jump went to Juin Mantusa of West Bengal, who cleared 1.71m. Mohur Mukerjee, also of West Bengal, matched that height and was listed second, while S Alice Deva Prasann of Tamil Nadu took third at 1.65m.
In the women’s under-18 high jump, Shravani Sanas of Maharashtra won with 1.63m. Ashmika CP of Kerala and Aaradhya Chaudhary of Rajasthan both cleared 1.60m and were placed second and third.
The women’s under-20 discus was led by Oshin of Haryana, who threw 43.81m. Maninder Kaur of Chandigarh was second at 42.81m, and Sona Mohan T of Kerala took third at 42.12m. Haryana’s day in the discus circle was therefore a double story, with Oshin adding a podium finish to Nishchay’s record.
In the women’s 3,000m race walk, Ranjana Yadav of Madhya Pradesh won in 13:58.57. Bhumi of Delhi finished at 14:40.60, and Manisha of Uttar Pradesh was third at 14:56.49.
The women’s heptathlon went to Muskan of Haryana with 4,790 points. Anamika Ajesh of Kerala scored 4,743 points for second, and Sonali Das of West Bengal finished third with 4,262 points.
In the girls’ under-16 long jump, Prapthi RV of Karnataka won with 4.20m. Arthi SK of Tamil Nadu was second at 4.19m, and Abinaya P, also of Tamil Nadu, took third at 4.11m.
Why Nishchay’s day stands out
Across a long list of events and age groups, Nishchay’s record is the headline that will travel furthest. A national record in a championship of this size is rare, and it came from an athlete who was still in the under-18 category. It is the kind of performance that turns a junior meet into a moment fans will remember.
The gold also came with a clear demonstration of how a single athlete can reset the benchmark for everyone who follows. The 64.09m mark had stood since 2010. On Monday in Chennai, it was replaced by a throw of 66.75m, and the young man who threw it is now the name in the record books.
