ACB Raids MEPMA Additional Director Over Rs 4.75 Cr Assets

IN SHORTACB searches MEPMA additional director Nallagunta Yadagiri Rao’s properties in Hyderabad and Suryapet. Officials value his assets at Rs 4.75 crore.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau has registered a disproportionate assets case against Nallagunta Yadagiri Rao, an additional director of the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA), alleging he holds assets beyond his known income. The bureau ran simultaneous searches at ten locations on Tuesday, including Hyderabad and Suryapet, and came away with property papers, gold, silver, vehicles and cash.

The searches covered his residence, his office, bank lockers, and the premises of relatives, close associates and suspected benami holders. Investigators recovered several key documents relating to movable and immovable property. Officials have put the value of the assets they found at Rs 4,75,61,171 based on official calculations.

Property worth crores in Uppal and Suryapet

The biggest single asset is a large residential building in Uppal. Investigators found a G+3 structure topped with a penthouse, valued at Rs 2 crore. The same locality also has two flats worth Rs 31.36 lakh and a commercial shop.

Across Hyderabad and Suryapet, Yadagiri Rao is linked to 12 open plots valued at Rs 58.63 lakh. In Suryapet district, investigators also found a separate house with an RCC roof, valued at Rs 4.75 lakh.

Gold, silver and vehicles

Officers seized 1,792.2 grams of gold ornaments, valued at Rs 33.82 lakh. They also found three kilograms of silver ornaments, valued at Rs 1.80 lakh. Those figures alone show how much of the wealth was held in portable, easily moved forms.

The vehicle list is equally striking. A Toyota Fortuner and another car were found, with a combined value of Rs 73 lakh. Three two-wheelers add another Rs 2.80 lakh.

Household goods and other items were valued at Rs 29.08 lakh, and electronic devices at Rs 7,01,171. Several bank accounts held a combined Rs 32.30 lakh in cash balances.

Officials valued the total assets at Rs 4,75,61,171, a figure built up from property, gold, vehicles, household goods, electronics and bank balances.

A number that does not add up on the page

The report carries a sub-headline citing Rs 40 crore in illegal assets. The itemised valuations in the body do not support that figure. When the listed items are added together, they total roughly Rs 4.75 crore. Readers should treat the body figures as the official breakdown, and the larger number as a claim that has not been reconciled with the itemised list.

Why the Telangana angle matters. This case sits inside Telangana’s own machinery for urban poverty alleviation. MEPMA is a state mission that works in municipal areas, and the official accused of holding these assets was an additional director in that body. Both Hyderabad and Suryapet, where the searches took place, are in Telangana. If the allegations hold, the case raises hard questions about how a senior official in a state-run urban welfare programme accumulated property, cash and vehicles on the scale described.

What happens next

Officials said Yadagiri Rao will be produced before the principal special court for SPE and ACB cases in Hyderabad and sent to judicial remand. Under that process, he would be held in judicial custody while the investigation continues.

A disproportionate assets case is built on comparing a public servant’s known income with the assets in his name or the names of people linked to him. Investigators typically trace property purchases, bank transactions and the sources of money used to acquire assets. The search results reported so far are the start of that work, not its conclusion.

The report does not indicate how long the inquiry will take, whether other officials are under scrutiny, or whether the individuals named as relatives or associates face separate action. Those details had not been made public at the time of reporting.

The searches on Tuesday were a sharp reminder that corruption cases often surface through the ordinary details of a home, a locker or a garage. A shopping list of plots, gold and cars can say more about an official’s life than any file note. For now, the bureau has put the numbers on the record, and the court will decide what they mean.
