India Scooter Sales Surge 29% to 48.65 Lakh in H1 FY27

IN SHORTIndia’s H1 FY27 scooter sales rose 29.38% to 48.65 lakh units, with electric scooters doubling and Honda Activa leading the charge. Full breakdown inside.

India’s scooter sales climbed 29.38% in the first half of FY2027, reaching 48,65,192 units between April and September 2026. The industry added 11,04,824 units compared with the same period last year, when volumes stood at 37,60,368 units.

The biggest story sits inside those numbers. Electric scooters more than doubled, and they now account for one in every five scooters sold. That shift is no longer a niche trend. It is reshaping who sits at the top of the sales charts.

Honda Activa Keeps the Crown

Honda Activa remained the undisputed market leader. It registered 14,82,917 units in H1 FY2027, up 15.12% from 12,88,165 units a year earlier. That single model added 1,94,752 units, the largest absolute gain among all listed scooter nameplates, and it holds 30.48% of total volumes.

TVS Jupiter followed with 8,29,725 units, growing 15.63% over 7,17,577 units. Its share stands at 17.05%. Together, Activa and Jupiter control 47.53% of the entire scooter market. Suzuki Access ranked third with 4,33,180 units, up 10.04%.

Still, the leaders grew more slowly than the overall market. Their percentage gains trailed the segment’s expansion, which means the growth is coming from somewhere else.

Electric Challengers Crash the Top Five

The fastest movers were electric. TVS iQube ranked fourth overall with 2,74,304 units, a jump of 85.63% from 1,47,773 units. Bajaj Chetak followed closely with 2,54,882 units, more than doubling its year-earlier volume of 1,18,776 units. That is growth of 114.59%.

Chetak added 1,36,106 units in the period, while iQube gained 1,26,531 units. Two electric nameplates now sit in the top five, a position that was hard to imagine just a few years ago for battery-powered two-wheelers.

Vida completed the top ten with 1,33,964 units, growing 117.89%. Rizta posted 1,30,734 units and grew 59.91%. Magnus, from Ampere, climbed 114.06% to 50,921 units. Indie surged 219.24% to 30,232 units, and Orbiter arrived with 31,668 units, with no matching volume in the year-earlier table.

Petrol Still Rules, But the Gap Is Narrowing

Electric scooter volumes reached 9,78,017 units in H1 FY2027, up 103.28% from 4,81,126 units a year earlier. Their share of total scooter sales rose to 20.10%, compared with roughly 12.79% a year earlier.

Petrol scooters did not shrink. Their volumes rose 18.54% to 38,87,175 units from 32,79,242 units. Petrol still commands 79.90% of the market, so the majority of buyers continue to choose combustion models.

Inside the electric segment, iQube led with a 28.05% share, followed by Chetak at 26.06%. Together, the two brands accounted for 54.11% of listed electric scooter volumes. Vida took third place, and the top four electric entries collectively contributed 81.18% of the electric total.

Other EV names also posted strong numbers. Ather 450 registered 36,520 units, up 29.78%. Hero Xoom 110/125 nearly doubled to 51,177 units across its petrol variant, and TVS Ntorq secured sixth place overall with 2,32,430 units, up 42.36%.

The Rest of the Pack

Further down the rankings, Yamaha RayZR grew 20.95% to 1,28,031 units. TVS Zest recorded 61,949 units, up 19.01%. Yamaha Fascino rose 70.11% to 56,659 units. Hero Pleasure was one of the few declining entries, slipping 6.44% to 49,308 units.

Honda Dio and Hero Destini 125 finished almost level, with 1,65,089 units and 1,65,071 units respectively. Destini’s 64.39% growth was far stronger than Dio’s 11.20% increase. Suzuki Burgman ranked ninth with 1,51,417 units, up 8.44%.

What the numbers signal

The first-half data points to a market where established petrol scooters still carry the volume, but electric models are climbing the rankings at a pace that petrol nameplates cannot match. Activa and Jupiter remain the biggest contributors. Electric offerings, however, are occupying more positions near the top and taking a bigger slice of every sale.

Activa and Jupiter remain the largest volume contributors, but electric offerings are taking a bigger share of the market and occupying more positions near the top of the rankings.

For buyers, the choice has never been broader. For manufacturers, the next battle is no longer only about petrol engines. It is about whether electric scooters can keep doubling while the petrol giants still hold the majority.
