Honda Off-Road Bikes for India? CEO Confirms Evaluation

IN SHORTHonda is evaluating more off-road bikes for India, CEO Tsutsumu Otani confirms. Motocross and enduro models are under consideration, but none are named.

Honda is weighing more off-road bikes for India, and the CEO is not hiding it

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is evaluating an expansion of its off-road motorcycle range in India, according to company President and CEO Tsutsumu Otani. He made the comments in a recent interaction with an industry publication, and the statement could open the door to a much wider lineup of dirt-focused machines from the brand.

For Indian adventure and off-road riders, the question has been simple: will Honda ever bring a genuinely capable off-roader to the country? Until recently, the answer was thin. Aside from private imports, the company offered few serious options in this space. That changed with the recent launch of the XR300L and XR300 Rally, but Otani’s comments suggest the company sees more room to grow.

What the CEO actually said

When asked about the potential for more off-road motorcycles from Honda in India, Otani pointed to the categories Honda is looking at. His words were direct:

“There are different categories of off-road motorcycles, including motocross and enduro. Honda is considering models in these categories.”

That is the core of the story. Motocross and enduro are two distinct segments with different machines, riders and purposes, and Honda has confirmed it is considering both. The statement does not name a specific model. It does not give a timeline or a launch window. What it does do is confirm that the company is actively looking at this segment for India, not just treating it as a passing curiosity.

A racing push is already underway

The evaluation comes after a visible move into off-road competition. Earlier this year, Honda announced its intention to enter the off-road racing scene in India. The first concrete step followed when it became the title sponsor of the Honda BB Racing team, which competes in the Indian Supercross Racing League (ISRL).

That team, like most others in the championship, fields both 250cc and 450cc machines. Those bikes are the CRF250R and CRF450R, and they are now officially supported by Honda. For a brand that has been largely absent from dedicated off-road machinery in India, a factory-backed race team is a clear signal of intent.

Why the global CRF range matters here

Honda’s dirt bike catalogue is far larger than what Indian buyers have been able to see. Internationally, the company offers dirt bikes ranging from 50cc to 450cc. It has as many as seven different CRF-dedicated off-road models, running from the beginner-friendly CRF50F all the way up to the professional racer-spec CRF450R. Otani’s comments raise the possibility that some of these could reach Indian showrooms.

The road-legal CRF300L and CRF300 Rally also remain a possibility. Their 286cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine has already been localised for use in bikes such as the erstwhile CB300R and the current Rebel 300. That gives Honda a platform it already knows how to build in India.

There is a catch, though. These models use more sophisticated equipment, including an aluminium swingarm, USD forks and a liquid-cooled engine. That hardware will likely push their price well above the current XR300 models. Honda may also see little sense in selling two different 300cc off-road models in the same market, which could shape which bike, if any, makes the trip.

Honda would not be the first Japanese brand here

Honda would be entering a space where rivals already have a foothold. Kawasaki has long sold a wide range of dirt bikes under both its KX and KLX banners. Suzuki once sold a limited number of RMZ dirt bikes in India, though that was in the past. Bajaj-owned KTM also offers a range of properly focused off-road motorcycles in the country.

That competition is good news for buyers. More serious options in the segment means more choice, more pressure on pricing and more reasons for enthusiasts to stay engaged with the category. If Honda follows through, it would join a growing group of brands aiming at riders who want more than a road bike with knobby tyres.

What is still unknown

No specific models have been pinpointed as being evaluated for India. It remains unclear how many models Honda will bring, which categories will come first, or whether road-legal and purpose-built competition bikes will both make the cut. For now, the confirmation is about intent, not inventory.

Still, the signals are stacking up. A factory-backed race team, a recently launched off-road model, a global range that spans beginner to professional machines, and a CEO willing to say the word “considering” on the record. For Indian off-road enthusiasts who have waited years for a Honda answer, the wait may finally be getting shorter.

TL;DR

  • Honda India CEO Tsutsumu Otani confirms the company is evaluating an expansion of its off-road motorcycle range in India.
  • Honda is considering motocross and enduro models, though no specific bikes have been named yet.
  • The move follows the recent launch of the XR300L and XR300 Rally and Honda’s title sponsorship of the Honda BB Racing team.
  • Honda BB Racing competes in the Indian Supercross Racing League with the CRF250R and CRF450R.
  • Honda’s global CRF off-road range spans seven dedicated models, from the CRF50F to the CRF450R.
  • Road-legal CRF300L and CRF300 Rally models could follow, though they may cost much more than the XR300.
