A 28-year-old woman from Nagpur found herself ensnared in a sophisticated human trafficking scheme after a Pune-based consultancy promised her a lucrative overseas job. The firm, identified as ‘We Migrate’, lured her with the prospect of a cashier position in Portugal, boasting a monthly salary of Rs 1.5 lakh and an eight-hour workday.

The woman, seeking better opportunities, discovered the agency through an advertisement on Instagram. This initial contact set in motion a chain of events that would lead to a month-long ordeal of exploitation and abuse far from home.

The Journey to Captivity

Under the guise of processing visas and other essential paperwork, the operators of ‘We Migrate’ systematically extorted approximately Rs 11 lakh from the woman. These payments were demanded in installments, gradually draining her savings and trust.

Upon her arrival in Portugal, the situation quickly deteriorated. The supposed ‘agents’ immediately confiscated her passport, effectively stripping her of her identity and freedom. She was then held hostage in a room for two days, a terrifying prelude to the forced labor that awaited her.

The woman was subsequently ‘sold’ to the owner of a beer shop, where she was compelled to work under duress. During her captivity, she endured severe mental and physical torture, her pleas for the return of her passport met with further demands for money.

An Escape from Torment

After nearly a month of unimaginable suffering, the woman meticulously planned her escape. Seizing an opportunity, she managed to flee her captors and travel by bus to Lisbon, a significant step towards regaining her freedom.

From Lisbon, she continued her arduous journey to Madrid, demonstrating remarkable resilience and determination. Eventually, she secured passage back to India via Doha, finally escaping the clutches of her tormentors.

However, her ordeal did not end upon her return. The fraudsters continued their intimidation tactics, demanding an additional Rs 3 lakh under the pretext of securing her another job in Malta. When she refused, they resorted to threatening her husband’s life and vowed to implicate her in false legal cases.

Driven by frustration and a desire for justice, the woman approached the Pune police, detailing her harrowing experience. Earlier this week, a case was officially registered against eight individuals, including the operators of ‘We Migrate’.
