Shraddha Dubey and her sister Rashmi Dubey were moved on Friday into a general barrack holding 45 women prisoners at Gosainganj district jail in Lucknow, one day after they were sent there in the Shiva Sharma murder case.
The sisters spent Thursday night and one day in quarantine before the shift. Their driver, Danish alias Tanveer, is lodged in the same jail and is now also under regular prison routine.
From luxury lifestyle to a common barrack
Jail officials say Shraddha and Rashmi were used to a luxury lifestyle. Behind the bars, they now follow the same strict rules and daily schedule as every other inmate. There are no special privileges.
On the night she entered the jail, Shraddha tried hard to look normal. Officials said the tension on her face was impossible to hide. For her first dinner, she was served whole urad dal, roti and a potato and soya methi curry. She could not finish it.
Sleep did not come easily. She tossed and turned through the night and managed only a few brief moments of rest before dawn. Under jail rules, both sisters were woken at 6 am sharp.
The jail menu, hour by hour
The sisters eat the same food given to the other prisoners. Breakfast at 7 am was sweet daliya and tea. Lunch came around 11 am and included whole urad and rajma dal, potato and bottle gourd curry, rice and roti. Dinner on Friday night was arhar dal, potato and pumpkin curry, and roti.
For a pair who once lived in comfort, the plain menu is a hard reset. Nobody on the outside was there to soften it.
No visitors, no conversation
No close relative or family member visited Shraddha, Rashmi or Tanveer on Friday. The sisters sat silently in their barrack through the day, their faces visibly drawn. They looked as if they were waiting for someone who never arrived.
They did not speak to any other prisoner all day. They did talk to each other now and then. Jail officials believe the sisters are slowly starting to adjust to the routine.
"The quarantine period is over and all three accused have been shifted to a general barrack. Their security is being taken care of fully." - Ritwik Priyadarshi, jailer, Gosainganj district jail (translated from Hindi)
Jailer Ritwik Priyadarshi confirmed the move. Women prisoners are being supervised by a female deputy jailer. A male deputy jailer is overseeing the driver. For security reasons, the three accused will appear before the court via video conferencing on their scheduled dates.
Police turn to the helpers
The investigation is no longer only about the accused. Police are now chasing the people who helped them stay out of reach after the incident.
Police probe has revealed a key detail. Soon after Shiva fell from a building, Rashmi Dubey called a man named Aamir to come and help. Hospital CCTV footage obtained by police shows Aamir Sheikh walking alongside driver Tanveer alias Danish. Aamir is wearing a black T-shirt in the footage.
Police teams are now searching for the helpers. The footage has put a new name at the center of the case, and the trail appears to be leading beyond the three people already in custody.
Bold inline: The case that began with a fatal fall has now become a story of a fast fall from luxury to a prison barrack, and of the people who may have tried to keep the accused out of reach.
