Hyderabad Water Board Plans Godavari Water Diversion

IN SHORTHyderabad Water Board plans to divert Godavari water as Singur and Manjira reservoirs near dead storage. Pipeline linking work near ORR is underway.

The Hyderabad Water Board is drawing up a plan to divert Godavari river water into the city, after water levels at Singur and Manjira dropped close to dead storage.

The board has started work on a connection at Velimela, near the Outer Ring Road, to tie a 3000 mm diameter Godavari ring main into a 1200 mm diameter Manjira Phase-3 and 4 gravity main line. Once linked, the system is meant to carry Godavari water to the areas that depend on the Singur and Manjira sources.

The urgency comes from the storage levels. When a reservoir reaches dead storage, the water remaining sits below the level at which it can flow out by gravity through the outlet pipes. Water that cannot be drawn out naturally is hard to supply, which is why the board is moving to bring in an alternative source before the shortage deepens.

On Sunday, Technical Director Prabhu and Chief General Manager Rajasekhar visited the site to check the progress of the work. After the inspection, officials were told to speed up the work and complete it as early as possible.

Officials were directed to accelerate the works and finish the project at the earliest, as the board races to head off a water shortage in the city.

For a city of millions, a dependable water supply is not a background service. It shapes daily routines, household budgets and the pace of life in every neighbourhood. When the main sources of supply weaken, the burden moves quickly onto residents, who face irregular supply, tanker dependence and rising uncertainty. The Godavari connection is designed to reduce that exposure by adding a second major source to a system that has been under strain.

Hyderabad sits in Telangana, and the Godavari project is a clear example of how state-level water planning reaches directly into the capital. The city’s supply depends on sources that are shared, managed and, in this case, being rerouted. Any delay in the Velimela connection would keep the pressure on the Singur and Manjira reserves, so the timeline matters as much as the engineering.

The reporting shows the board is treating the work as a priority. The inspection by senior technical and management officials signals that the project has moved beyond planning and into active execution. The next key question is how quickly the connection can be completed and whether the diverted flow can reach the areas that are currently most exposed.

For residents, the story is practical. Water security depends on infrastructure that most people never see, from ring mains and gravity lines to the reservoirs feeding them. This project is an attempt to widen the city’s options before the shortage becomes harder to manage. Whether it arrives in time will shape how Hyderabad copes with water stress in the months ahead.
