Destiny 2 Unvaulted Content Won’t Fully Return Until 2028

IN SHORTBungie’s Destiny 2 unvaulting roadmap: content porting starts early 2027, and full release of vaulted campaigns isn’t due until February or March 2028.

Bungie will not finish restoring Destiny 2’s vaulted content until early 2028, and players who expected a quick comeback are now staring at a timeline measured in years. In a new Community Update and a blog published on October 29, 2026, the studio confirmed that content porting begins in early 2027, with the final release landing in February or March 2028.

The update is a sharp turn for a game that was supposed to be winding down. In September 2026, Bungie reversed its shutdown plans for Destiny 2 and announced a content-porting project to bring legacy material back. Now the studio has put dates on that promise, and the dates are a lot further away than many fans were hoping for.

Studio head of product Josh Deane laid out the plan during the October 2026 Community Update. He described the first step of the “Next Chapter of Bungie” initiative as starting the unvaulting process, a move he framed as the way to make the game whole again.

“the first step in the ‘Next Chapter of Bungie’ initiative is starting the unvaulting process to make the game ‘whole’ again.”

The full timeline, date by date

Bungie has mapped out the process in four stages, and each one pushes the finish line further down the road.

June 2026: Bungie received initial approval to assess the Destiny 2 content unvaulting roadmap. That was the first formal green light, and it set the wheels turning months before the public saw any dates.

September 2026: Bungie took a U-turn on its shutdown plans for Destiny 2 and announced the content-porting project. This is the moment the studio committed to bringing old content back rather than letting it fade.

January or February 2027: Bungie expects to complete pre-production on the unvaulting process and port legacy content into the game. This is the point where the work shifts from planning to building.

February or March 2028: Bungie expects to release all the unvaulted content, which ends the roadmap. Even after pre-production wraps, Deane said the studio expects to reach full production within 12 months, so the 2028 window depends on that stage going to plan.

What comes back first

Bungie has named the content that will be available to every Destiny 2 player once unvaulting is complete. The first wave includes the Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns, along with their Strikes, Raids, and Raid Lairs. The Menagerie PvE activity is also returning, with overhauled rewards.

The studio is clear that this is only the first pass. The goal of this stage is to make the campaigns available to all players, which is the core of the promise to make the game whole again. For a lot of players who missed those stories when they were locked away, that is the part they have been waiting to hear about.

What Bungie plans beyond the first pass

Bungie says it also wants to focus on several other areas. Those include free roam destinations such as Public Events, Lost Sectors, and Escalation Protocol. They also include seasonal activities running from Sundial in Season 9 through to The Coil in Season 23, along with updates to raid and raid lair weapons and new PvP maps.

The studio was just as direct about what is not on the table. Bungie has confirmed it currently has no plans to update New Light content, seasonal story missions, the Kell’s Grave Gambit map, or seasonal hubs. For players who wanted those pieces restored in the same push, that is a hard reality to swallow.

Bungie is also planning multiple celebration updates beyond Monument of Triumph, which gives the wait a few milestones along the way.

The next update arrives sooner than the rest

Bungie is expected to drop the next major Destiny 2 update in February 2027, and it will introduce a new Progress bar. The studio made a similar comparison to Marathon, pointing to its 2027 PvE update as a reference point for how these drops are being structured.

That February 2027 update is the nearest concrete milestone in the roadmap. Everything after it, including the bulk of the restored campaigns, sits on the far side of a long development cycle, and the entire content-porting process isn’t expected to wrap up until early 2028.

Why the wait is hitting so hard

The roadmap is the story here, and it is a difficult one for the player base. Destiny 2 fans spent a long stretch believing the game was on its way out. When Bungie reversed course, the relief was real, but the timeline now stretches that relief across more than a year, with the final unvaulted content not due until February or March 2028.

Gamers are stunned by how long the process is taking. The campaigns that define the game’s story are the pieces they most want back, and Bungie’s own schedule puts them at the very end. Every extra month between now and 2028 means another stretch where those stories stay out of reach for players who want to experience them.

Bungie is making a strong promise with this roadmap. The studio says the unvaulting work will make Destiny 2 whole again, and it has the dates on record. Whether the 2028 finish line holds is now the question every Destiny 2 player is going to be watching.
