With the marquee tournament scheduled to commence on Wednesday, September 16, following the opening ceremony on September 15, the unexpected ordeal has sparked serious concern regarding the squad’s readiness and physical well-being. Players and technical staff were left waiting at the airport without any formal timeline or communication from local organizers regarding when their accommodation would be made available.

Logistical Chaos Signals Alarm Before Title Defense

Grandmaster Srinath Narayanan, serving as the non-playing captain for the Indian contingent, publicly expressed alarming distress over the organizers’ lack of management. Describing the circumstances as a troubling start to their campaign, he confirmed that the delegation received zero clarity after spending hours sitting inside the terminal.

"Having a terrible experience at the @FIDE_chess 2026 Olympiad. The team landed 5 hours ago at Samarkand airport. The team still haven’t been allotted rooms, with absolutely no clarity on when it’ll be allotted,"

Echoing these worries, star player Vidit Gujrathi shared his dissatisfaction regarding the unsettling environment awaiting the contingent in Uzbekistan, noting that the group was left stranded while waiting for fundamental arrangements to be resolved.
