Rajkumar Sharma Dismisses Selection Debate Around Virat Kohli

Questions continue to swirl regarding Virat Kohli’s place in India’s long-term ODI plans heading toward the 2027 World Cup, but his childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, believes the discussion is entirely unnecessary. Speaking on the sidelines of a Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) ceremony held to honour grassroots cricketers, Rajkumar made it clear that the veteran batter’s recent performances speak for themselves.

"I think you should see for yourself what he’s doing, what he has done in the last few matches, and how he is doing it on the field. So I think it should not be a discussion even," Rajkumar told IndiaToday.in.

Dominant Numbers on the Field

The statistical record backs up the coach’s stance. Since the 2025 Champions Trophy, Kohli has emerged as India’s leading ODI run-scorer, accumulating 760 runs across 12 matches. Maintaining an outstanding average of 76, his run tally includes three centuries and five half-centuries, demonstrating consistent output in the 50-over format.

Backing Rohit Sharma Amid Future Speculation

Rajkumar also addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding former captain Rohit Sharma. At 39 years old, Rohit has faced persistent questions regarding his ODI future despite scoring 727 runs in 15 matches since the Champions Trophy at an average of 51.92, featuring two hundreds. His performance at Lord’s in July provided a firm response to critics, though chatter re-emerged ahead of the BCCI’s September review meeting.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified the board’s position by confirming that Rohit continues to play superbly and remains firmly within the selectors’ plans. Rajkumar echoed this sentiment, describing Rohit as a tremendous player and an undeniable match-winner on his day.

Having coached Kohli for over 25 years from his early club cricket days, Rajkumar credited Kohli’s sustained excellence to his work ethic and mental strength. India is set to play a three-match ODI series against the West Indies beginning September 27, followed by five ODIs in New Zealand between November 4 and 15, and three additional ODIs against Sri Lanka in December.
