Hyderabad RTA Cracks Down on BOSS, IGOD Number Plates

IN SHORTHyderabad RTA is seizing vehicles and fining drivers with BOSS, IGOD and other tampered number plates. Officials warn of cases and licence cancellation.

Hyderabad RTA officials are seizing vehicles and imposing fines on drivers who fit tampered number plates, including fancy plates reading BOSS and IGOD, after hundreds of vehicles were caught in recent police and RTA inspections in the city.

The message from the transport department is blunt. Play with the letters on your plate and you will get caught. Fines are one thing. Vehicle seizures are now routine, and officers say cases will be registered against repeat offenders, with a review of licence cancellation on the table.

Many of the vehicles stopped during the checks had the same problem. Owners had replaced the standard registration with numbers that spell out words or read like letters. Plates showing BOSS, IGOD, 1, 2 and 3 were common on city roads, according to the reports.

Lakhs spent, rules ignored

Some of the drivers caught had paid large sums for their fancy numbers. Their argument at the inspection points is simple: they paid lakhs, so they should be allowed to write whatever they want. Officials have not accepted that reasoning. Several confrontations with officers followed, and the RTA says the rules leave no room for personal preference.

Rules must be followed, otherwise it will not work, officials warned the drivers during the drive.

The crackdown is not limited to vanity plates. Officers found owners who had installed private plates with their designations, names, lucky numbers and symbols. Some plates are so twisted or stylised that the actual registration number is hard to read without close inspection. Others mixed English and Hindi words into their plates to create a meaning that the registration system was never designed to carry.

A single digit, a Rs 1,000 fine

One case from the city shows how strict the enforcement has become. A car owner whose vehicle recently received the number 0009 fitted a plate showing only the digit 9. Officials fined him Rs 1,000. The fine was small compared with what the owner had paid for the number, but it sent a clear signal to other drivers that partial or altered plates would not be tolerated.

Officials said more cases are being prepared against vehicles with tampered plates. They also plan to run awareness drives so that owners understand what the law requires before they are caught on the road.

Why the HSRP plate matters

The authorities are pushing drivers toward the High Security Registration Plate, known as HSRP. Under the Motor Vehicle Act, a registered vehicle automatically receives a plate that meets the required standards, and the owner must fit it. Officials say the plate is more than a formality. When an HSRP is scanned, it reveals the vehicle details along with the owner’s full details. That information matters in cases of theft and accidents, because investigators can trace a vehicle quickly.

Officials pointed to sections 50 and 51 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1989, as the basis for the drive. Those provisions give the department the authority to act against plates that do not conform to the rules.

What the colours mean

The story also laid out the colour coding that governs the plates. There are seven categories of number plates, and each category is assigned to a specific type of service. The colours carry the meaning:

White plate with black lettering is for non-transport vehicles, meaning private cars used by their owners. Some white plate vehicles are run as taxis in the way yellow board vehicles are, which is precisely the kind of misuse officers are now targeting.

Yellow plate with black lettering identifies transport vehicles that are allowed for commercial use, including goods service. Black plate with yellow lettering means the vehicle is permitted for rental service. Owners of such vehicles can rent them out on a rented basis, but if a vehicle without that permission is rented, the RTA will seize it.

Green plate with white lettering indicates an electric vehicle. Green plate with yellow lettering also marks an electric vehicle. Blue plate with white lettering shows a consulate office vehicle. Yellow plate with red lettering signals a trade certificate, which is used to move new vehicles to sales expos.

These codes are not decorative. A driver who changes the lettering, adds a name or swaps in a fancy number undermines the system that lets police and transport officials identify what a vehicle is allowed to do. That is why the department has treated tampering as a legal violation rather than a style choice.

What drivers should do now

For anyone who has fitted a personalised or fancy plate, the advice from the authorities is straightforward. Check the registration number against the rules, replace any plate that does not comply, and fit the HSRP when it is issued. Waiting until an inspection team stops your vehicle is the most expensive option. Vehicles can be seized on the spot, and the fine is only the start of the process.

The drive is still underway, and the reports indicate that more vehicles will be checked. Hyderabad drivers who spent money on their plates to make a statement now face a simpler choice: follow the standard, or explain the plate to an RTA officer while the car sits in a yard.
