EC Allots Football Player Symbol to Mamata Camp in TMC Split

On Friday, the Election Commission allotted the interim name ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’ and the ‘football player’ election symbol to the faction led by Mamata Banerjee for the upcoming October 6 West Bengal bypolls.

Interim Identities Assigned Following Party Freeze

The regulatory decision came one day after the commission froze the original ‘All India Trinamool Congress’ party name along with its hand-drawn ‘flowers and grass’ emblem. That traditional symbol had represented the political party for nearly three decades since Banerjee founded the organisation in 1998 after departing from the Congress. Under the same interim order, the rival rebel faction was designated as ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’ and assigned an ‘envelope’ symbol for the upcoming electoral contest.

Banerjee Condemns Ruling and Backs Opposition Alliance

Reacting strongly to the poll panel’s decision, Mamata Banerjee characterized the freezing order as a black day in the country’s democratic history, citing political vendetta and bias aimed at satisfying rival egos.

"I cannot leave All India Trinamool Congress until I leave this world."

Vowing to challenge the interim arrangement legally, Banerjee announced that her group would refrain from contesting the Nandigram by-election, pledging support instead for the Congress party candidate to strengthen the INDIA alliance. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee also rejected the poll panel’s freeze as illegal and structurally flawed, though he conceded the faction would temporarily adhere to the allotment for the bypolls.

Escalating Claims and Internal Party Fracture

At a press conference, Banerjee claimed that roughly 14,000 party workers were currently imprisoned, alleging that her party’s bank accounts were frozen and that she was effectively restricted under house arrest. These assertions remain unverified by independent sources. Conversely, leaders from the rebel camp, including West Bengal Assembly chief whip Akhruzzaman Ansari, welcomed the commission’s interim directions while maintaining confidence that their faction would ultimately be recognized as the legitimate original party.

The current legal and identity crisis stems from internal factional struggles following the TMC’s Assembly defeat in May. The dispute deepened when 58 rebel legislators chose expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of Opposition over Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, followed by 20 Lok Sabha MPs led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar aligning as a separate parliamentary group supporting the NDA.
