Despite a valiant fightback from Ravindra Jadeja, who scored a blistering 77 off 59 balls, and a stoic 50 off 72 balls from MS Dhoni, India fell agonizingly short after rain forced the match into a second-day reserve period.

The 2019 semi-final loss was more heartbreaking for me. We were chasing a very normal ODI target, and everyone expected us to win. The England semi-final was different because it was a T20, where anything can happen. The next-day finish in 2019 may have changed things because there was moisture after the rain, but you never know. If the win wasn’t written for us, perhaps we wouldn’t have won even on the first day.

While the defeat marked one of the gloomiest days in recent Indian cricket history, it also foreshadowed the gradual conclusion of Bhuvneshwar’s own journey in national colors.

He foresaw that national selectors would inevitably seek a fresh direction following another major tournament disappointment. "In Adelaide it happened. I came to my room and told my wife. I told this from my experience. In the dressing room, everyone was disappointed. There were a few briefs before we left. But when I came back to my room I told Nupur this was my last World Cup. Because what I have seen from my experience, when you lose a tournament like this selectors want to look ahead, and that is fair," Bhuvneshwar recalled.

Acceptance and Life Beyond the Blue Jersey

That quiet instinct proved accurate. Bhuvneshwar last featured for India in November 2022 during a T20I series against New Zealand. Although initial communications led him to expect a potential selection for the subsequent two series, the call never arrived. He admitted that coming to terms with the silent exit required time, but gaining clarity helped him find peace. "Till a few series... Because I had received a call. What they said, based on that I felt maybe next two series. But then I realised it’s not what they said," he shared, adding that family played a crucial role in helping him process the truth without feeling hurt.

Even as his international chapter closed, Bhuvneshwar has continued to showcase his masterclass in the Indian Premier League. Serving as a linchpin for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he has guided the franchise to back-to-back title victories. In the 2025 season, he snared 17 wickets, before following it up with a stellar 28-wicket tally in 2026—finishing just a single wicket behind the Purple Cap winner.

Despite his dominating form on the domestic stage, the seasoned pacer remains grounded, viewing any potential national call-up as a welcome bonus rather than a lingering obsession. "I’m not playing to prove anything, but I’d be happy to play for India again," Bhuvneshwar noted, having finally made peace with the quiet closure of his international career.
