Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday announced a 10-member Task Force to assess the challenges and feasibility of bringing Formula 1 racing back to India by 2028.

The ambitious initiative reflects a deep yearning within the nation’s sporting landscape to reclaim its spot on the elite global motorsport calendar. Motorsport enthusiasts and organizers have long desired to see the world’s fastest drivers competing on Indian soil once more, longing to recreate the thrilling atmosphere that faded over a decade ago. By establishing a formal government-backed panel, India aims to turn those high-octane aspirations into a well-structured reality.

A Comprehensive Roadmap for High-Speed Ambitions

The newly established Task Force will be chaired by NITI Aayog Programme Director and Adviser Yugal Kishore Joshi, with Joint Secretary (Sports) Kunal serving alongside him on the committee. To ensure seamless coordination across various governance sectors, the panel features representation from the departments of tourism, commerce, and revenue, as well as the state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Key motorsport stakeholders are also embedded directly into the framework. Representatives from the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), the Buddh International Circuit (BIC), and the Madras International Circuit (MIC) will participate in steering the strategy. The FMSCI, currently led by President Arindam Ghosh ahead of its upcoming Annual General Meeting, will also appoint a technical expert to support the committee’s work.

"The Terms of reference of this committee are suggesting comprehensive ways for sustainable growth of motorsports in India, a holistic coordinated roadmap for revival of Formula One so that we can host a race in 2028," Mandaviya said during a media interaction.

Tackling Taxation and Policy Obstacles

The push for Formula 1’s return centers heavily on overcoming the financial and regulatory barriers that previously cut India’s Grand Prix era short. The country hosted three official races at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida between 2011 and 2013 before bureaucratic friction and complex taxation classification issues forced the event off the FIA calendar.

To prevent similar setbacks, the Task Force is tasked with conducting a detailed assessment of taxation-related challenges and formulating targeted policy interventions. The committee will also review necessary infrastructure updates, evaluate potential Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models, and quantify the broader economic, tourism, and investment advantages that hosting top-tier motorsport can deliver to the nation.
